Jan 10, 2007 - JR EAST: NEW SUICA & N’EX TICKET DUE IN MARCH
NEX

On Wednesday, 28 March 2007, East Japan Railway (JR East) will introduce its new discount Suica & N’EX ticket at a price of ¥3,500, on sale at the JR stations in both terminals of Narita Airport. The N’EX part of this new package offers foreign visitors (anyone entering the country on a non-Japanese passport) a discount fare on the Narita Express one way from the airport stations to any point in the JR Tokyo Urban Zone.

This includes popular downtown destinations such as Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shinjuku or Ikebukuro, as well as more distant spots such as Yokohama and Ofuna. The ticket covers reserved seats in Ordinary (coach class) cars on N’EX. Savings run from ¥1,440 for Tokyo Station to ¥3,000 for Ofuna. The ticket also allows local train connections from N’EX stations to other JR stations in the JR Tokyo Urban Zone.

The Suica card included in this package allows ¥1,500 worth of travel on most local trains (both JR and non-JR) and many buses in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The Suica is a ‘smart card’ that is easy to use: just touch it above a scanner to enter or exit station platform areas. It can also be used at thousands of shops carrying the Suica or PASMO logo. Additional money can be added to the Suica card at any time and the card has no limit to validity. For anyone planning a stay of several days in Tokyo, and who is not using a Japan Rail Pass or a JR East Pass during that time, the Suica & N’EX ticket will be a great advantage. You may wish to plan a trip using the Suica & N’EX ticket for your first few days in Japan and then use a Japan Rail Pass for later travel to Kyoto and other long-distance trips. Please note that this new ticket will only be sold at the JR stations in both terminals of Narita Airport ; credit cards are accepted. There will be no similar discount fare to the airport so plan to use the ticket on arrival.
