Most foreign visitors arrive in Japan through Narita Airport (Tokyo) Kansai Airport (Osaka) or Centrair (Nagoya). In Tokyo and Osaka, JR provides fast and frequent airport shuttle trains connecting arrival terminals and downtown. In Nagoya, similar service is provided by non-JR private rail. Many other airports including Fukuoka and Sapporo have similar convenient rail links. But please note that Shinkansen 'bullet trains' trains do not go directly to airports; they must be accessed via downtown stations. Bus services are also available at airports, but travelers should note that taxis are generally very expensive. So take the train, for comfort, speed and reasonable cost. |

The Narita Express connects both terminals at Narita Airport with downtown Tokyo; trains operate generally once every thirty minutes. Trains from the airport take one hour exactly to Tokyo Station (for Shinkansen connections) and continue to other important locations including Shinagawa, Shinjuku and Yokohama. The trains offer both Ordinary and Green (first class) seating with special racks for luggage. The Japan Rail Pass and JR East passes are valid for the Narita Express. There is a JR Pass exchange point in both terminals.

The new Chubu International Airport (Centrair) is linked with downtown Nagoya by private rail (Meitetsu) that provides frequent and fast service between the airport and the Meitetsu station adjacent to the JR Nagoya Station. There is frequent express service taking approximately 30 minutes. These trains are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass but are inexpensive. You can exchange a JR Pass voucher at Nagoya Station until late evening. Please ignore the limited hours listed on the official Japan Rail Pass site.
